Eminem King Of BET Ciphers, Slaughterhouse Say

‘We enjoy what everybody else is doin’, but our focus is us, and in our minds, we’re the best rap group,’ Joe Budden tells MTV News.

By Rob Markman

At its core, hip-hop is a competitive sport. Hit records are nice, but the greatest MCs are often defined by their wordplay.

Judging from fan reaction across Twitter, the highlight of Tuesday's 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards were the nine different rhyme cipher segments, which showcased a total of 41 MCs all vying for rap supremacy. Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, B.o.B, Machine Gun Kelly, Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group and Eminem and his Shady 2.0 crew all contributed lethal bars to the program.

According to Slaughterhouse member Joe Budden, it was Marshall who reigned supreme in his round of rhyming. "We wasn't chumped, though," Budden told MTV News on the show's black carpet.

Yelawolf set it off with a tongue-twisting verse, while DJ Premier spun the instrumental from the East Flatbush Project's 1996 classic "Tried by 12." Joey threw the gauntlet next, with lines referencing some of rap's elite, including Jay-Z, Kanye West and Lil Wayne. "I'm grown, I'm not watching the throne, I'm sabotaging it," he spit before dropping, "Enough raps from you scrub cats about cocking the snub back/ Wayne couldn't teach me how to love that."

When asked to contemplate Shady's place among other rap crews, Crooked I pounded his chest and nominated Slaughterhouse for the highest honor. "Right now, we're the best f—in' rap group, straight up," he said.

"Best rap group in the universe," Budden chimed in. "We thinking about us and what we're doin'. We enjoy what everybody else is doin', but our focus is us, and in our minds, we're the best rap group."

After last night's performance, Slaughterhouse certainly made a case. With his verse, Royce Da 5'9" expressed his appreciation for pop star Rihanna, and after the cipher aired, "Hi Rihanna" became a trending topic on Twitter. Still, the segment's main draw was Eminem, who stacked rhyme triplets atop each other in vivid and witty ways. Taking poetic license, Em described his rollout plans for both Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf's upcoming album releases, spitting: "You're about to see peace destroyed, it'll never be restored/ When I unleash these beastly hoards on your CD stores/ Wanna stop it? You will need a priest, at least three swords/ A license to ill from the Beastie Boys, three Ouija Boards and a squeegee/ And please be warned, don't ask what the squeegees for/ Or the holy water, acid raps that'll eat these floors."

And it all sounds delightful.

U2, Metallica Bring History-Making Collaborations To Rock Hall Concert

Fellow headliners Aretha Franklin and Jeff Beck, along with guests like Mick Jagger and Ozzy Ozbourne, celebrate night two of Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary.

By Saimon Kos

NEW YORK — For the second night in a row, Tom Hanks walked onstage at Madison Square Garden to do the introduction for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Concert, and for the second night in a row some of the greatest rock acts of all time shared the stage. Performances varied from classic hits to once-in-a-lifetime collaborations as Aretha Franklin, Jeff Beck, Metallica and U2 all brought out big-name guests.

Jerry Lee Lewis got things started again, this time performing "Great Balls Fire" and literally kicking down his seat before exiting to make way for the rest of the acts.

Franklin took the stage in a red dress that was outshined only by the sound of her voice as she opened the night with "A Natural Woman." Her set included a collaboration with Annie Lennox and one with Lenny Kravitz, who added his voice to her classic hit "Think." When asked afterward how her duet with Lenny came about, she said it was due to his friendship with her son, who also happened to play lead guitar for her band that night.

Next, one of the all-time great guitar players performed as a replacement for a reportedly ailing Eric Clapton. This seemed fitting, since in the 1960s, Jeff Beck was Eric's bandmate in the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page. Jeff was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame this year, and on Friday night he reminded everyone why it was an honor that was well deserved. Sting, Buddy Guy and Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top each took a shot at matching their voice to Jeff's guitar, and each felt like a an experiment in music that went terribly right, especially when Beck and Gibbons recreated Jimmy Hendrix's masterpiece "Foxy Lady." No voice was needed for Jeff's final performance of the night, as he paid tribute to the Beatles with an instrumental version of "A Day in the Life." It was one worthy of the highest allowable score on "Beatles Rock Band."

Metallica brought more than just metal when they hit the stage. Starting off with "For Whom the Bell Tolls," the boys were then joined by Lou Reed, before succumbing to the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne. Together they paid tribute to Black Sabbath by performing "Iron Man" and "Paranoid." Then things took an unexpected turn when Metallica teamed up with the Kinks frontman Ray Davies, giving a metal edge to the punk classic "You Really Got Me." Before calling it a night, the boys ended the show with one of their biggest hits of all time, "Enter Sandman." This had its own unexpected twist, as Yankee footage began to play on the monitors above them for no apparent reason. Then again, this is New York during the World Series.

The final and maybe biggest act of the second night at MSG was U2. First, they shared the stage with Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith, performing "Because the Night," a song Bono said his band only wishes they could have written. His passion for the track became even more apparent when he decided to do it a second time because it was clean on the first take. Bruce stayed on for one more song, lending his voice to the classic U2 song "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The next collaboration was one that included a much younger act, by Hall of Fame standards, when the Black Eyed Peas came out to sing "Where is the Love." Fergie stuck around when Mick Jagger came out to perform "Gimme Shelter." Mick and Bono kept the energy high, turning "Stuck in a Moment" into a duet. And finally, U2 performed "Beautiful Day," bringing the night to a beautiful end.

Nicki Minaj Drops Fist-Pumping ‘Starships’ Single

‘There was so much love surrounding the making of the song,’ she says about Roman Reloaded track.

By Jocelyn Vena

Nicki Minaj channels her inner pop princess for her just-released single "Starships." The fist-pumping song dropped on Tuesday (February 14), and it's club-ready and poised for crossover success.

Thanks to its bouncy beat, Minaj's sing-songy chorus and producer RedOne's eye for Euro house-influenced pop music, Minaj may have a new "Super Bass." It's a blast of pop goodness in which Nicki raps and sings about partying and doing what feels good for you. The song is also full of signature Minaj sass and bravado.

"Starships were meant to fly/ Hands up and touch the sky/ Can't stop 'cause we're so high/ Let's do this one more time," she declares on the feel-good chorus, before it repeats and evolves to a smashing, dance-floor-busting grind of beats, shouts and noises that are certain to get her Barbz on the floor.

Minaj shines like a pop star the likes of Britney Spears, Katy Perry and Jennifer Lopez on the genre-busting track. But the song is also signature RedOne thanks to his keen ear for world music. That influence is felt on the song's breakdowns, which recall smashes he's made for J.Lo and Enrique Iglesias.

"There was so much love surrounding the making of the song, because RedOne is just so sweet to work with," Minaj told Ryan Seacrest. "He just sent me that one day and he said, 'Hey, I got something for you!' I was like 'You got to be kidding me, right?' I went to the studio and started writing … scratch that … I didn't even write the first verse! That was just me mumbling and just saying the first thing that came to my head, and we recorded it, because I just felt like, let's go to the beach … let's go get away. It was just so good. It feels good!"

"Starship" is the latest track to get a preview before Nicki drops Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded on April 1. On Sunday, she gave fans an over-the-top taste of "Roman Holiday" when she performed it during the Grammy Awards.

During the interview with Seacrest, Minaj shared that Reloaded will focus on the many sides of Nicki — and it's clear "Starships" shows her pop side. "I've never had this much fun recording music in my life. My first album, I was very guarded," she said. "I felt like I was making music to please everyone else. I had to be politically correct, but this album I am just creating music, and there's such a big difference. Literally, in the studio we were cracking up laughing, having fun and enjoying ourselves. The music itself, you're going to get every side that I've ever shown and then a little bit extra. I've tried to make it very, very balanced, because I don't ever want to be boxed in, and that's always what drives me. So I made a very diverse album."

John Mayer Cancels European Tour Dates Due To Illness

Singer was scheduled for shows in Amsterdam, Madrid and Manchester this week.

By Jocelyn Vena

John Mayer has been forced to cancel the rest of his European tour dates after coming down with an undisclosed illness. He was slated to play two sold-out shows in Amsterdam, a festival in Madrid and a show in Manchester, England, this week. Mayer's next scheduled date is July 16 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"After a sold-out performance in Copenhagen, John Mayer was forced to cancel his second show there on 5/31 due to illness," a statement on the musician's website reads. "Regrettably, the illness has caused his remaining European shows scheduled through this week to be canceled as well (Amsterdam, Madrid and Manchester). Ticket holders should apply for refund from point of purchase. Mayer is returning home to the States, and a full recovery is expected under a doctor's supervision."

The singer has been working to restore his reputation this year after stirring up controversy with an interview in Playboy, in which he uttered the N-word, said he wasn't attracted to black women and spoke about his intimate relationship with Jessica Simpson. On Tuesday, Mayer premiered the music video for his Taylor Swift duet, "Half of My Heart," on People.com. In the clip, which doesn't feature Swift, Mayer plays up his Casanova reputation by leaving a bride at the altar.

When MTV News caught up with Mayer last year, as he was releasing his latest album, Battle Studies, he spoke about getting Swift on the track. "I woke up with the song in my head called 'Half of My Heart,' " he recalled. "And the idea is that it's this real sort of updated — not that it needs to be updated — sort of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks thing."

Eminem Inducts Run-DMC Into Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame With Poetic Tribute

‘Two turntables and a microphone, that’s all it took to change the world,’ Em says of his heroes.

By Gil Kaufman

Eminem at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday

Photo: Michael Loccisano/Getty Images

On the night when Run-DMC became only the second hip-hop act to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, it was fitting that the group that blazed the trail between rock and rap in the 1980s was invited into the rarified club by a hip-hop icon of the modern era whose career is built on their bedrock: Eminem.

His sartorial style inspired by his heroes, from the black leather jacket, shirt and pants, to the black fedora tilted on his head, Eminem bounded onto the stage with a pimping swagger and crossed his arms in a Run-DMC style as he leaned into the microphone.

"Two turntables and a microphone, that's all it took to change the world," the reclusive Detroit MC began. "Three kings from Queens made rap music in the b-boy stance a global phenomenon," he said of the group's members, rappers Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons and Darryl "DMC" McDaniels, and late DJ Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell. (Head to the MTV Newsroom to read the e-mail JMJ's close friend Eric "Shake" James sent to MTV News while he witnessed the ceremony.)

After the first time he heard the group's "hard beats and bold rhymes," at age 11, Eminem recalled that "something about the big drums and the strong raps that grabbed hold of my ears and changed my life." Clearly humbled by the honor, Slim Shady's speech had a lyrical groove as he added, "Something fresh, something tough. Something dangerous. Something beautiful and something unique. Two turntables and a microphone," staring out at the crowd and rubbing his hands together as if savoring the treat of setting up his heroes for the glory they so richly deserve.

Recalling how their 1985 video for "King of Rock" had them crashing a fictional Rock and Roll Museum and being told they didn't belong in such a museum, Eminem said, "And 25 years later, man, here we are. They didn't take no for an answer, much the same way as they didn't give up when much of the world refused to recognize rap as real music. They were the first rock stars of rap. They were the first movie stars of rap. They were the first rap group played on MTV. … They were the baddest of the bad, the coolest of the cool. Two turntables and a microphone."

Em talked about not knowing what he wanted to do in life while growing up in Detroit and then hearing Run-DMC and realizing "that you could write your own rules, which is something that still inspires me, as well as every rap other artist, constantly." And then the crowd finally caught on to the rhythm of Slim's callback refrain and repeated along with him, "Two turntables and a microphone."

"I remember being in ninth grade when Raising Hell came out," he recalled, and wryly added, "Two years later, I still remember being in ninth grade when Tougher Than Leather came out. I had skipped school, if you can believe that, to go buy Tougher Than Leather on cassette the day it came out. As soon as I heard 'Run's House,' man, it was pretty much a rap for me. Marshall Mathers became Eminem. It was the first time Run-DMC had changed my life, but it wouldn't be the last. Two turntables and a microphone."

Bringing the group's indelible career into the present, Em paid tribute to late DJ Mizell's mentorship of Slim's protégé, 50 Cent. "Jay shaped the way 50 wrote, the way he rapped and the way he thought," Em said of Fif, whose early works were overseen by Mizell. "Again, Run-DMC changed my life. Without them I wouldn't have met one of my closest friends."

Eminem closed by saying that the group's impact can be felt everywhere. Echoing one of the group's most famous couplets from "King of Rock," Em concluded, "There's three of them, and if you grew up on hip-hop like I did, they are the Beatles."

With their friends and family surrounding them onstage, Rev Run first thanked Mizell's mother for always allowing the young trio to practice at her home and never asking them to turn down the volume. He also thanked his brother, hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, who convinced the group to change their name from the Sure Shot Three and to mash rock with their rap.

Paying touching homage to his adoptive parents, DMC urged the crowd to give love to foster children. "If my birth mother never gave me up, my real mother would have never came and got me," he said, hitting on one of the topics that has become his abiding passion since the group broke up in 2002 following Jay's still unsolved murder. "There would be no Run-DMC; there would be no rap music the way it is today. … But forget about all that celebrity stuff, y'all. This little boy, Darryl McDaniels, wouldn't be standing here tonight telling y'all that. The best thing y'all can do is give love to a kid, because that kid may grow up and be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame one day."

Mizell's mother, Connie Mizell, also reminisced lovingly about how her late son tore up every one of her turntables learning how to scratch, and she didn't mind. And how "the boys" would be tearing it up in the next room as she studied in the adjoining room, and she didn't mind. "Nothing happens before time," she said. "It wasn't time when Jason was living. It was time after he'd gone. Because you see the blessings is still going on. He is not forgotten."

The group did not perform at the ceremony, in keeping with their pledge not to play live again following Mizell's death.

Rev Run’s Son Jojo Arrested For Marijuana Possession

‘Jojo is all right. It’s working itself out,” Run tells MTV News.

You probably didn't want to be at <MTVNLINK type="url" id="/ontv/dyn/runs_house_season_05/series.jhtml">"Run's House"</MTVNLINK> on Saturday morning. That's because on Friday night, Joseph Simmons Jr., 19, known to millions as "Jojo," was arrested on Manhattan's Upper West Side after allegedly buying marijuana and trying to run away from the cops, according to a spokesperson for the New York Police Department.

After being spotted by police allegedly purchasing marijuana and then rolling it into a joint, the aspiring rapper attempted to evade arrest by throwing his BMW in reverse, almost backing into a police cruiser. The younger Simmons, who is the leader of a rap crew called Team Blackout, struggled with police attempting to apprehend him.

The NYPD spokesperson said Simmons was booked on a felony charge of attempted reckless endangerment (for backing into the police car), two misdemeanor charges of criminal use of drug paraphernalia and resisting arrest and a violation for marijuana possession.

Reverend Run, Simmons' father and the legendary co-founder of of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame trio Run-DMC, called MTV News on Monday morning (May 11) with an exclusive comment on the incident. "I didn't always have this collar around my neck," Run explained. "I come from a rap, rock and roll background. Jojo is all right. It's working itself out. We're pulling together as a family going forward. You live and learn." Run also said his son was released without bail on Saturday.

The younger Simmons could not be reached for comment at press time, but he Tweeted around 3:55 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, "I'm alright everybody!" His dad Tweeted early Saturday morning, "you can learn many things from your Children … (Patience for instance)."

New York's Daily News reported on Sunday that Simmons was released on his own recognizance after a Manhattan judge dismissed the felony charge of attempted reckless endangerment.

Grammy Ratings Up Thanks To Adele, Whitney Houston Tribute

Preliminary ratings put Sunday’s show as second highest-rated Grammys ever.

By Gil Kaufman

Sunday night's 54th annual Grammy Awards were a ratings smash thanks to the televised return of the night's big winner, Adele, as well as a thrilling tribute to Whitney Houston by singer Jennifer Hudson.

In fact, the performance-packed three-and-a-half hour broadcast scored the second-highest rating in history for the show, second only to the 1984 eight-trophy coronation of Michael Jackson for his landmark Thriller album.

According to preliminary ratings from Nielsen that combine live viewing with DVR figures, 39.9 million viewers tuned in to the show, putting the telecast behind the 51.67 million who watched the 1984 program. The dramatic ratings uptick followed two years in which the numbers were clustered in the 25 million to 26 million range after what Billboard reported were five years of low-20-million numbers.

The show boasted a 14.1 rating among adults 18-49, a 41 percent increase in that demo over last year and the best ratings returns since 1990.

Those viewers were rewarded with a diverse roster of performers that ranged from rock icon Paul McCartney performing twice, to the Foo Fighters, a tribute to electronic dance music, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown and Rihanna.

The night's emotional highlight was a stirring tribute to Houston — who died Saturday at the age of 48 — by Hudson, who performed Whitney's most iconic song, a cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You."

The other major buzz moment was the return to the stage of Adele, who sang at a major industry event for the first time on Sunday after career-saving vocal-cord surgery last November.

Oscar’s Best Song Category: Why Only Two Nominees?

Complicated voting rules shut out songs by Elton John, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige and Pink.

By John Mitchell

Blu and Linda in "Rio"

Photo: 20th Century Fox

Tuesday morning's (January 24) announcement of the 2012 Oscar nominations delivered plenty of surprises. Michael Fassbender ("Shame"), Albert Brooks ("Drive") and Charlize Theron ("Young Adult") were overlooked in the acting categories, while Melissa McCarthy ("Bridesmaids"), Rooney Mara ("The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo") and Max von Sydow ("Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close") scored surprise nominations. But perhaps no category was more head-scratching than Best Original Song.

Despite the fact that a short list of 39 tracks were eligible for nomination, only two were named — "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" and "Real in Rio" from "Rio" — leaving tunes from Elton John and Lady Gaga, Pink, will.i.am, Zooey Deschanel, Elvis Costello and Mary J. Blige shut out of the competition.

Many Oscar-watchers were left wondering why the Academy would opt away from the traditional five contenders in favor of just two little-heard songs. Well, a closer look at the Oscar rule book shows it's probably less a case of choosing to nominate only two songs than it is simply a case of a single song scoring enough points to secure a nod, and then bringing its closest competition along for the ride.

Oscar nominations are arrived at using a very complicated weighted system in which members of the Academy, voting exclusively for members of their own branch (i.e. actors chose the acting nominees, directors vote for directors, etc.), rank contenders in order of preference. From there, a "magic number" is determined that relies on the number of ballots cast for a category, along with a specific mathematical equation. Ballots are tallied and contenders are eliminated through several rounds in a process that tabulates factors like first-place mentions and so on. Once a contender reaches the magic number, they are an Oscar nominee. (The folks over at EW's PopWatch break down the selection steps in great detail.)

So this is how the nominees are determined — with one exception: Best Original Song. In 2009, when the Academy opted to up the number of Best Picture nominees to 10 (the voting body has since altered that number), it also changed the rules for Best Original Song. As Billboard points out, members of the Academy's music branch now "assign each song a numerical score between 1 and 10, and if no song receives an average of more than 8.25, there are no nominees. If only one song tops the threshold, as clearly happened here, the next highest vote getter secures a nomination as well."

This year's Best Original Song category boils down to this: either Bret McKenzie's "Man or Muppet" or "Real in Rio" by songwriting trio Sergio Mendes, Carlinhos Brown and Siedah Garrett secured a score of 8.25 or better, earning a nomination and pulling the #2 vote-getter into the fray. Simply put, members of the music branch didn't award any other song, including John and Gaga's duet "Hello Hello" or Blige's "The Help" track "Living Proof," a score high enough to secure a nomination.

But lest you think that this means the category is all but locked, think again. While selecting the Oscar nominees is an intensely mathematical process, picking the winners is much easier. Once the nominations are decided, every member of the Academy can vote in each category and the nominee that receives the most votes wins. Easy enough. And since actors are the largest voting block of the Academy— and would have had nothing to do with the tracks selected to contend for Best Original Song — it's anyone's game.

Metallica Announce First-Ever Orion Music Fest

Arctic Monkeys, Modest Mouse, Gaslight Anthem among other acts on June festival lineup.

They've headlined stadiums around the world and made an incredibly polarizing album with punk grandfather Lou Reed. So what's left for Metallica to do to cap off a stellar year? How about launch their own summer festival with a lineup that includes some of their favorite bands?

On Tuesday (February 7), the group announced the debut of the Orion Music + More fest, described as an annual "music, arts and lifestyle" gathering that will feature multiple stages and take place June 23-24 at Bader Field in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

In addition to headlining sets from Metallica each day — during which they will play The Black Album one night and Ride the Lightning the other in their only North American performances of those classic releases in 2012 — the festival will also feature sets from: Arctic Monkeys, Avenged Sevenfold, Modest Mouse, the Gaslight Anthem, Cage the Elephant, F—ed Up, Best Coast, Hot Snakes, Titus Andronicus, Gary Clark Jr., Lucero, Roky Erickson, the Black Angels, the Sword and Liturgy. More bands will be announced in the coming weeks.

"We've had the idea of doing our own lifestyle festival with lots of diverse music and fun and games for years," drummer Lars Ulrich said in a press release announcing the event. "Finally this year all the practical ducks lined up in a row, and we are beyond psyched to bring Orion to our fans, friends and the curious. After the most incredible of weeks ever in December 2011 celebrating our 30th anniversary at the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA, bringing the spirit of that week, the looseness of that week, the possibilities of that week, the fan interactive elements of that week, and the (fill in your own blank here) of that week to a festival setting is so exciting we can hardly contain ourselves."

Pre-sale tickets for the Metallica fan club start Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET, with the public on-sale slated to begin Saturday. Tickets are $150 for two-day passes for the public and $125 for fan-club members. Head to OrionMusicAndMore.com for details.

Usher And David Guetta ‘Proud’ Of ‘Without You’

‘When you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that’s the reality of what music is,’ Usher tells MTV News.

When Usher and David Guetta hooked up for the French DJ's latest album, Nothing but the Beat, the two superstars created a chart-topping smash, "Without You," that combines Guetta's ear for house beats and Usher's ability to convey a range of emotions with his voice. It's a song that has really stuck with fans of all genres of music.

The track — a swirling pop ode to not giving up on love in the face of adversity — struck Usher with its emotional core.

"David Guetta is an amazing artist," he told MTV News last week at a Pencils of Promise charity event. "We talked for many years about working together, and we found a record that was incredible."

Usher said it was a song that resonated with him personally. "I think the world wanted a record like that. That [song] really spoke to the journey that I've actually been on in the last three years," he said. "Traveling all around the world, music sounds different. There's many different genres, and when you see R&B and pop and house, as well as electronic, come together, that's the reality of what music is."

When MTV News talked to Guetta on the American Music Awards red carpet Sunday, he said "Without You" is a standout track on the album. The LP dropped earlier this year and also includes Nicki Minaj, who performed with Guetta at the AMAs.

"It's one of my favorite songs," he said. "It's just, I'm a DJ, so I want to make people dance always, but I also want to give emotions. When it comes to that, 'Without You' is probably one of the most emotional songs that I've done, and yes, I'm very proud of that record."

T.I., Dr. Dre ‘Creating Chemistry’ In Latest Collabo

‘Of course we can get together, he got hot beats and I got dope rhymes,’ T.I. tells MTV News.

By Rob Markman, with reporting by FLX

No matter your stature in rap, working with Dr. Dre is a pretty big deal. Newcomers like Kendrick Lamar and Slim the Mobster have seen their careers grow considerably after working with the good doctor, while veterans like Busta Rhymes and 50 Cent have marveled at Dre's in-studio work ethic. For T.I., however, simply working with the West Coast production king isn't enough. He wants to develop a tighter musical bond.

On Tuesday (December 28), Tip leaked a trailer for the mixtape F— da City Up that showed him and Dre working together in the studio.

"Dre was here. He sent for me over to the spot. We really just turned up more than anything else. It was about creating chemistry," T.I. told MTV News while he was in Atlanta preparing for the New Year's Day release of the mixtape.

This isn't the first time that the King of the South has collaborated with the California legend. A few years ago, "Topless," a song that was said to be recorded for Dre's oft-delayed Detox, leaked onto the Internet. According to T.I., their most recent session was a fruitful one.

"Of course we can get together, he got hot beats and I got dope rhymes, so we can always get together and make music," Tip said. "But for people to feel what we're sayin' and for it to sound like a party comin' through your speakers, you gonna have to create some chemistry. So that's what we spent more time doin' than anything else; developing that chemistry."

NEW YORK — On a windy Saturday last month, the Paradise Theater in the Bronx was an undulating sea of sequins, stilettos and star power as the 2011 edition of Black Girls Rock! got under way.

An annual celebration of the accomplishments of black women in a myriad of spheres, from science and technology to the arts and politics, the event is the brainchild of philanthropist Beverly Bond, a onetime model/DJ. Imagine balling up the sentiments of your favorite empowerment anthem into a fist and then sprinkling them like confetti over a gathering of girls, and you might begin to get an idea of what it felt like to sit in that majestic theater during the taping of the show that night. You'll get to see for yourself when it airs Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on BET.

Actresses Tracee Ellis Ross and Regina King opened their co-hosting gig — dressed in an ebony gown and an ivory sequined pantsuit, respectively — with some funny banter about their mutual connection to all-grown-up "Cosby" kid Malcolm-Jamal Warner (Ellis Ross plays Warner's wife on the brand-new BET sitcom "Reed Between the Lines," while King is his real-life leading lady). Over the course of the night, with assists from a series of celeb presenters like former MTV VJ LaLa Anthony and model Alek Wek, "BGR" '11 gave special nods to some much-deserving honorees. MTV News rode the D train to the Grand Concourse in the BX and previewed some of the highlights for you.

The Anthems
Any R&B diva worth her salt has at least one love-yourself tune to her credit, but if you're Mary J. Blige, the undisputed queen of hip-hop/soul, then you've got a catalog full of certified classics guaranteed to cure Superwoman syndrome. Fans were treated to a rousing, show-closing set that included MJB's "My Life" and "Just Fine." Soul sisters like Jill Scott (the poetic "Womanifesto") and Erykah Badu (an intergalactic "On and On") are just a few of the stirring performers who pass the baton to upstarts like Elle Varner and Melanie Fiona.

Who Run the World?
Yes, there was a 70-something gospel legend and a duo of trailblazing activists battling violence against women as part of the Rebecca Project, but some of the most impressive award recipients were girls barely out of their tweens. M.A.D. (Making a Difference) Girl honoree Leanna Archer, became CEO of her own natural hair-care products company at 13, and now just 15, heads up a foundation devoted to helping underprivileged kids in Haiti.

Girl 'Power'
While some of us are confronting the so-called "quarterlife-crisis" or maybe occupying Wall Street at 25, Angela Davis had just hit the quarter-century mark when she began building a formidable career as an activist, aligning with movements like the Black Panther Party. The Brandeis-educated Davis went on to spend the next few decades crusading for marginalized groups like African-Americans, women and prisoners.

The winner of this year's Icon Award admitted she used to feel "embarrassed" seeing her face staring back at her from T-shirts until she realized that the garments represented the "translation of the success of a movement." That's real girl power, and theatergoers thanked her (fists raised) with a standing ovation.

Screen Stars
Co-hosts Ellis Ross and King weren't the only big- and small-screen stars to grace the stage. Taraji P. Henson was honored with the Star Power prize. The actress was already a young mom to a son when she got to Hollywood, but it was her fictional role as mom to A-lister Brad Pitt in the "Curious Case of Benjamin Button" that earned her an Oscar nod in 2008 for Best Supporting Actress. In an upbeat acceptance speech, the extroverted Henson reminisced about praying for "longevity" back in those early casting call days.

Christina Aguilera Will Return To ‘The Voice’

Rest of the panel is also signed on to return.

Unlike the typical judges'-panel drama unfolding over at "American Idol," it looks like NBC newcomer "The Voice" has locked down its diva for a second season: Christina Aguilera will be back on the small screen in the spring.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, despite rumors to the contrary, an unnamed source said Aguilera actually agreed to give it another go on the reality singing competition "weeks ago."

The good news for fans of the upstart show is that Aguilera will be seated in the tall-backed chairs next to all her homeboys, as Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine, country star Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green have also officially re-inked.

Citing an unnamed source, Us Weekly reported Thursday (June 30) that the entire quartet have signed on for a second season.

Shelton recently told a Knoxville, Tennessee, radio station that he'd love to come back for another run. "The reality of it is, you've got four different artists who are doing completely different things and a network that has a time schedule that they want things to happen in," he said. "Who knows what'll happen, but I'd hate to miss it."

Levine — who mentored Javier Colon to a win on Wednesday night — also seemed eager to make a return engagement. "Yeah, that's the question that everyone's asking me," he told the Reporter earlier this week about the constant questions about whether he'll be back. "I'd hate to say for sure, but I think so. If they'll have me, I'd be delighted to be back."

The show has been renewed for another season and is expected to make its second bow after the Super Bowl in the spring.

The Reporter also revealed that the pay scale on the show has Aguilera far out-earning her fellow coaches, raking in a reported $225,000 per episode to the men's $75,000 each.

The quick re-sign of Aguilera is in contrast to the drama at the granddaddy of hit TV reality singing shows, "Idol." While veteran judge Randy Jackson and newbie Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler are onboard for the upcoming 11th season, it remains unclear if the other new face of the series, Jennifer Lopez, will be back.

With her music career revived, thanks to the exposure of "Idol," Lopez has been coy about whether she's willing to give it another shot.

"You know, this is the question of the hour," she said earlier this month in an interview with BBC's Radio 1. "I don't know. I haven't been forced to make a decision, and I'm glad about that because, honestly, I'm very on the fence about it. I had an amazing time doing it and I loved it, but I have a lot of other things happening, and it's going to come down to me making a choice of what I want to do for the next year, and we're not really at the breaking point of, 'You have to make a decision right now!' I'm just really enjoying the time of just waiting and seeing."

Are you happy the panel will be back on "The Voice"? Let us know in the comments!

Adele’s Grammy Haul: How Much Did It Weigh?

British songstress joins a list of big winners with heavy Grammy armloads, including Beyoncé, Norah Jones and U2.

By Gil Kaufman

It's always exciting to see an artist have a huge night at the Grammys. And no one had a bigger one Sunday than Adele, who went home six for six, sweeping the top categories and cementing her name in the record books alongside Beyoncé as the most celebrated single-night female Grammy winner in history.

There's always a feeling of inevitability when an album that goes into the night with a lot of nominations starts racking up a slew of wins in the major categories on the way to the (usually) inevitable crowning achievement: Album of the Year.

But in some ways, it's hard to really put those historic nights into full frame until you can, literally, see the whole metal haul in one shot. Hence, the obligatory armload-of-Grammys money shot. From Michael Jackson to Santana, Beyoncé, Lauryn Hill, U2, Foo Fighters, Norah Jones and Alicia Keys, the night never really comes into focus until the beaming winner gets up on the stage in the press room and struggles to hold all that gold in two arms.

Which led us to wonder, just how heavy was Adele's Grammy haul Sunday night? We asked the Recording Academy, which kindly let us know that each gilded gramophone weighs 5 pounds and 4 ounces, which means Adele was holding up exactly 31 pounds and 8 ounces of Grammy glory.

She was a bit shy of the all-time heavyweight record, which belongs to the late Michael Jackson and Santana, who each won eight awards on their big nights in, respectively, 1984 and 2000, and just behind Paul Simon, who took seven in 1971.

So, just to put it into perspective, here are a few other things that weigh around 31 pounds:

» 20 dozen eggs
» Four gallons of water
» A young emperor penguin
» An average two-and-a-half-year-old boy or four newborns
» A healthy female beagle
» A child's bike
» The average amount of cheese an American eats every year
» A very heavy broadsword
» A bit less than what the average woman should gain during a healthy pregnancy
Grammys 2012: Winners, Losers And Everyone In Between

Adele, Nicki Minaj, Dave Grohl and more make Bigger Than The Sound‘s look back on music’s biggest night.

By James Montgomery

Adele backstage at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards

Photo: Christopher Polk/ WireImage

How you felt about Sunday night's 54th Grammy Awards probably had a lot to do with whether or not you were Adele. Or Dave Grohl. Or Nicki Minaj. For different reasons, of course.

If you were Ms. Adkins, you undoubtedly loved the show, because you won darn-near everything (and slayed in your comeback performance). If you were the Foo Fighters' frontman, you also undoubtedly loved it, not just because you won darn-near everything, but also because you appeared to be having a thoroughly awesome time whilst doing so. Grohl was the secret-MVP of the telecast, thanks to his Slayer T-shirt, rambling acceptance speech, that shot of him totally feeling Deadmau5's performance, and everything that happened in the last three minutes of Paul McCartney's night-closing jam, especially the 45-second stretch where he stood directly behind McCartney during "The End," grinning like a new enrollee at Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp.

If you were Minaj, well, let's just say that eventually, after spending years convincing yourself it wasn't that bad, you'll end up watching the footage on YouTube and discover it was actually worse. From arriving on the Grammy carpet with a dude dressed like the pope to an odd, over-the-top, obtuse-to-the-point-of-self-parody performance of "Roman Holiday" (your move, Gaga) — with a Best New Artist loss to a guy dressed like a social-studies teacher thrown in at some point in-between — it was not a great night for you.

Nor was it much fun for Lady Gaga, who, despite bringing a scepter to the show (inspired!), was essentially an afterthought. Or Katy Perry, whose performance never truly seemed to get on track. Or Mumford & Sons, who went winless in four categories on Sunday night, meaning they didn't get to leave their seats once during the three-and-a-half hour show.

There were, of course, artists who managed to shine from beneath Adele's and the Foos' respective shadows. Jennifer Hudson, whose tribute to the late Whitney Houston was both nuanced and emotional (a tricky thing to pull off), surely only added to her ever-growing legend. Taylor Swift displayed class and sass — and maybe grew up a little bit before our very eyes — with her performance of "Mean." The Civil Wars appeared to be genuinely likeable people. Shoot, even David Guetta, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne managed to make it out of that whole "EDM Tribute" debacle relatively unscathed.

But what about the viewers at home? Well, I'm sure the folks who were outraged last year when Arcade Fire beat Eminem for Album of the Year — folks like Steve Stoute, the marketing exec/music vet who was so upset by incident that he penned an open letter to the Grammy governing body that compared Em to Bob Dylan — really liked the show a lot. So, too, one can assume, did dudes who like Dubstep (more often than not, these are the same people). It was, after all, the first Grammy telecast in recent memory that went almost entirely by the books, giving the year's best-selling artist three-quarters of the year's biggest awards (Album, Record and Song of the Year). Was that a result of Grammy voters bowing to public pressure to make the show more representative of the actual whims of music-buying community, or was Adele's 21 the rare album that so seized the collective conscience that anything less would seem outrageous? I'm inclined to think it was the latter. But still, at the end of the day, peering up and down the winner's list … these were very much the people's Grammys.

On the other hand, if you were someone who was slightly inspired by Arcade Fire's AOTY win (even though you'd never admit to your kickball team/artesian cheese monger/barista girlfriend), well, there's a pretty good chance you're feeling conflicted about the Grammys. On one hand, you love everything Adele stands for — and in opposition to — and you're happy she won. On the other, well, dude, you were sort of rooting for Bon Iver … especially if his wins might have symbolized some profound change in the minds of Grammy voters. Alas, we ended up with more of the same … though, in a pinch, we'll take Best New Artist.

In short, the 54th Grammys were the show we're always complaining about whenever we're complaining about the Grammys. Predictable. Poorly paced. Pandering. By the same token, they were perfectly representative of the year in music, which is all the Steve Stoutes of the world were asking for in the first place. And so, once again, the awards remain caught between those two extremes. And in a year where both sides could at least agree on Adele, that doesn't exactly bode well for the future. Then again, I suppose that no matter what happens, there will be some segment of music fans who will be upset. If the 54th Grammys taught us anything, perhaps it's that you really can't win. But you most certainly can lose. Just ask Nicki Minaj.

DO WE LOVE IT?! Ashanti’s TOTALLY Sheer & Revealing FALGUNI AND SHANE PEACOCK Look

Oh Ashanti. Have we gone down the ever beaten path of I-Need-To-Get-Obnoxiously-Naked-To-Get-Attention? Decide if we love "The Woman You Love" singer’s NYC Fashion Week getup inside…

She may have a bangin’ body and all…but is this the right way to show it? Ashanti, who will perform on "Good Morning America" today, rolled to the Falguni and Shane Peacock Fall 2012 show on Sunday in the designer’s sheer paneled multi-colored uber revealing dress.

And we’re not sure if she’s channeling Pocahontas or just her own concoction of strategic covering. But:

You decide.

DO WE LOVE IT?!

BONUS: Ashanti also sang the National Anthem at the Lakers VS. Knicks game at MSG this past Friday. And here’s a pic of her and her ruffles and blue pumps:

Jessica Simpson On John Mayer: ‘He’ll Never Have This Napalm Again’

Simpson addresses Mayer’s Playboy comments, Billy Corgan on ‘The View.’

By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: ABC

It seems like all anyone wants to talk to Jessica Simpson about is her love life. Is she still angry that John Mayer dished about their sex in Playboy? Is she dating Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan? And while she is now able to laugh off Mayer's comments about her, she neither confirmed nor denied that she's romantically involved with Corgan when she stopped by "The View" on Monday (March 15).

"Yes, my phone has been ringing. It's more embarrassing 'cause I'll walk into a restaurant or something and I'll notice more men are looking at me," she said of the response to Mayer's comments, which included calling her "sexual napalm." "And he'll never have this napalm again. Well, [I don't need to curse him out], that's why I do shows like this!"

She added that while they were dating, the only "stupid" comment he made to her was that they should break up. "He did apologize, but I mean, at this point it doesn't really matter," she said. "I mean, I only thought he was stupid for breaking up with me."

So with her romance with Mayer behind her, is she dating Corgan, who helped her on the track for her new VH1 show, "The Price of Beauty"? "I can't meet anybody! I'm marrying them the next week," she said. "Billy is one of my dear friends and he did help arrange the song. He understands my heart and knew what I wanted to do."

Simpson also addressed her weight — "I don't want to be [very thin] … it's not worth it." — as well as her new TV show, she also looked to the future, which she hopes will include kids. "I can't wait to have kids. Well, honestly, if I don't have kids by the time I'm 40, my best friend [and hairstylist] Ken Paves and I are going to have children," she said. "Oh no! I'm not pregnant!"

Justin Bieber Records With Drake For Believe

Bieber’s manager confirms on Twitter that the young pop star hit the studio with Drizzy for his upcoming album.

Believe it or not, there doesn't seem to be anyone that Justin Bieber isn't getting on his in-the-works next album. It seems that fellow Canadian and Take Care rapper Drake has been tapped to appear on the album, set for release later this year.

The news of their collabo was confirmed on Thursday (February 9) by Bieber's manager Scooter Braun on Twitter. But any Belieber could have easily figured out whom Bieber was referring to when he tweeted this message to his devotees: "You really wanna know who im going into the studio with tonight??#bigbro #CANADA."

This Drizzy collabo has been a long time in the making. At the 2010 VMAs, Bieber shared with MTV News that he wanted to get his pal on his next proper (non-holiday) album. Then, in a radio interview late last year, he confirmed that Drake, along with Kanye West, was in talks to work on Believe.

However, as the list of collaborators for the album grows, one more name is being tossed about as a potential collaborator. Sources tell Hollywoodlife.com that Ke$ha may appear on Believe. The source says that K-dollar sign "would also be a part of the song in a duet capacity." The duet has yet to be confirmed, and K is busy in the studio working on her own rock and roll-inspired album.

This wouldn't be the first time Bieber and Ke$ha have paired up. They appeared together at the 2010 Grammy Awards, where the newbies presented the award for Best New Artist to the Zac Brown Band.

Super-producers Pharrell, will.i.am and Lil Wayne (who recently visited Bieber in the studio) are among the other names that have been tossed about as possible folks working with Bieber on the album. Believe is the follow-up Christmas-themed Under the Mistletoe, which was released in late 2011.

What collaborations do you hope to see on Believe? Leave your comments below!

Three years ago, Adele was an up-and-coming singer who was just beginning bubble on the American pop scene thanks to her 19 single "Chasing Pavements." In 2009, a year after the release of her debut, the still-somewhat-unknown Brit won the Best New Artist Grammy. She was well on her way to becoming one of the biggest voices in pop.

This year, she'll head into Sunday's Grammys with six nominations for her heartbreaking 21. But back in '09, Adele — who had yet to build up a big Stateside fanbase — managed beat the likes of the Jonas Brothers and fellow Brit Duffy in the category. Three years later, the JoBros can laugh off the loss.

"We lost," Kevin joked to MTV News when we caught up with the guys this week. Asked if he had any 2012 Grammy advice for the "Rolling in the Deep" singer, he could only say, "To Adele … she's only like one of the best artists ever. It's cool."

Joe also had some words of wisdom for this year's crop of Best New Artist nominees, including the Band Perry, Bon Iver, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and Skrillex.

"I think, go in knowing that you're a winner already. You got that far, you should feel like a champion," Joe said. "I believe Norah Jones said it: Sometimes it can be a curse. You get scared if you're gonna win. I'm not saying there's a curse on Adele — she's amazing! — but a lot of times there's a lot of artists that didn't end up winning that became huge, so you're a winner [regardless]."

And as the JoBros dished, if you do lose, there's always a consolation prize. "You do get a really cool necklace, gold metal thing," Kevin revealed.
